Rules and Prizes

  • Three (3) winning compositions will be chosen and awarded the following:
    • $500 cash prize for the 1st place composition; $250 cash prize for the 2nd  place composition. Cash prizes are generously provided by the Myers Family.
    • A high-quality audio recording of the winning works by the BPO Trombones made available on social media and for your own portfolio.
    • Publication by Ensemble Publications and distribution through Hickey’s Music Center, the leading trombone music resource in the USA.
    • The 1st Prize winning work will be performed at a popular trombone festival*, and on a program(s) by the Buffalo Chamber Players. Performance engagements will be scheduled for 2nd and 3rd place works.
  • Deadline for receipt is January 4, 2016
  • Works shall be for three (3) trombones with no other instruments (i.e. no accompaniment)
  • Instrumentation shall be considerate of standard orchestral trombone section:  2 tenor trombones and 1 bass trombone, or 1 alto trombone, 1 tenor trombone, and 1 bass trombone.
  • Duration of works should keep in mind programming needs of trombone trio. A maximum of 10 minutes is strongly recommended. Multi-movement works longer than 10 minutes that could have movements performed as extractions are also acceptable. As an example, the BPO Trombones frequently perform outreach concerts that feature several different eras of music in 45-50 minutes. A piece considerate of these programming and timing guidelines is ideal.
  • All submissions may be kept and performed by the BPO Trombones at their discretion.
  • Submissions must be unpublished, but may be “self-published” (i.e. available only through the composer)
  • Pieces must have been composed since January 1, 2014.
  • Entries shall be submitted on the Submissions page starting on October 15, 2015, with a link to sound files made available on a web-based player (SoundCloud, YouTube, etc). Sound files may be electronically generated or an acoustical performance.
  • Score and parts must be submitted as two separate files, in PDF format.
  • It is not the responsibility of the BPO Trombones, Ensemble Publications, Hickey’s Music, or other hosting parties to arrange or fund travel or accommodations for performances of the winning work(s), or to provide recordings of specific performances.

* Trombone festival performances TBD as schedules not available at time of contest announcement, but may include such events as the American Trombone Workshop and the Cleveland Trombone Seminar. Visit the Stay Updated tab to be notified of performance announcements.
